Table of Contents

Air-dry clay is a non-toxic and safe paper clay that children use to create tiny miniatures. For example, succulents, cacti, cute octopuses, cats, etc. Today we will use air-drying clay step by step to make miniature furniture – a sofa.

Prepare materials

We’ll need 4 different colors of air-dry clay (white, blue, black, and flesh), which you can find in any set.

That’s enough, we are going to make clay furniture in 3 steps.

Tutorial for Making Miniature Clay Furniture Sofa

Our miniature sofa production process can be divided into three parts: the sofa body, two cushions and one rag. The end result is like what you see at the beginning of this blog.

Step 1: Make the Body of the Clay Sofa

First, we mixed white and a little flesh-colored air-dry clay and rolled it into long, thick strips.

Bend the ends of the strip so it looks like two horns. Of course, you know, this is the armrest part of the sofa. You can use your fingers to gently press around the clay to make it look fluffy.

Take another piece of light flesh-colored clay mixed with white and roll it into a sausage-shaped oval. Next, you can use a plastic knife to cut it into 4 equal parts.

Flatten these four lumps of clay into small squares, and you’ll want to keep them some thickness. Then you will be able to place them on the sofa in the order shown in the picture. Putting the seat positions first, then the backrests, will make thing easier.

Finally, we add four legs to the sofa. Take a little bit of black light clay and knead it into four small pieces. Turn the sofa made previously and stick on the four small round legs, and the body part is completed.

Next we will add two cushions to the sofa, which will give it a lived-in feel.

Step 2: Make Two Clay Cushions

Take the blue lightweight clay, roll it into a ball, and then flatten it slightly with the your fingers. Next, pinch out four rounded corners for it. You can look at the shapes of the cushions at home. Observing them carefully will help you make clay miniatures.

Repeat the above steps to make a smaller one. Then, take some white and blue clay and mix it to make a light sky blue color. Knead the sky blue clay into a small cylinder and stick it to the cushion you just placed.

Put two cushions on the sofa and oh, it looks great, doesn’t it?

Let’s add a little more decoration to it, a rug, just like at home.

Step 3: Make the Rug in Front of the Sofa

Roll a ball of blue clay into a round and flatten slightly. Here you can press it thin. Then knead a little light blue clay into a long and thin strip and wrap it around the blue carpet as shown in the picture.

Next, we grabbed some tiny clay and kneaded it into droplets. Stick them on the carpet like petals.

Finally, use a plastic knife to carve some stripes around the rug to give it a boho feel. Place the rug in front of the sofa and we’re done!

You can place it on a bookshelf or other suitable display location. Be careful not to leave it in the kitchen or bathroom, as wet will soften it again.
